I’m Not A Man (or A Writer) if I use “AI” for Authorship

(Originally posted on Linked In)
I cannot understand how anyone–regardless the “necessity” attested to–can feel they have integrity if using AI for writing anything that speaks of authorship; research?—okay; outlines?—okay—but a cover letter? You don’t deserve a job if you obtained it with something that should stem from your ability to express yourself clearly and articulately; we are not talking about the Pulitzer, here; we are talking about telling management whom and what you are and what value you can offer. Done. I don’t use it for anything indicating my ability and would never. In fact–I haven’t used it for any writing, yet. I wouldn’t feel like a man.

This was in response to this post by S.T. (My response and conclusion are at the bottom):

No replies. No interviews. Just silence for 90 days.

Then, I ran my resume through ChatGPT.

Got 5 callbacks in less than a week-using just 8 prompts.

[Save for later]

1. Spot the Flaws

Prompt: Act as a recruiter for [your industry/role]. Review my resume below and highlight weak areas, overused buzzwords, and missing metrics. Be brutally honest.

2. Rewrite for Impact

Prompt: Rewrite this resume to sound more results-driven, quantifiable, and compelling for [target role]. Focus on achievements, not just duties.

3. ATS Boost

Prompt: Update this resume to be fully optimized for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) for the role of [specific role/title]. Use industry-specific keywords naturally.

4. Craft My Hook

Prompt: Write a powerful, 3-line professional summary that hooks a recruiter in under 10 seconds. Prioritize impact, clarity, and value.

5. Upgrade Experience

Prompt: Rephrase the experience section to highlight impact, results, and transferable skills using action verbs and quantifiable outcomes.

6. Format Fix

Prompt: Suggest a clean, modern resume format that works for both humans and ATS. No graphics, no columns. Just structured and effective.

7. Tailor for the Role

Prompt: Tailor this resume to fit this specific job description [paste JD]. Highlight matching experience and reword sections to match the language used.

8. Standout Cover Letter

Prompt: Write a compelling cover letter based on this resume and job description. Keep it personal, enthusiastic, and under 200 words.

My Comment:

Sounds good if you want machines talking to machines. What happens when the machines writing your resume make you look good to the machines reading your resume–and you then have to work with people–no machines between you?

Conclusion:
While the benefits in the knowledge gleaned from the changes made by machines can bee seen, I would see them as tutelage, not as replacement for human beings doing the work. This is the surrender–intellectually and effort-wise–to the machines. It is one thing to have a horse or a calculator do the heaving lifting, it is another to have them design the journey and plot the course without knowing how to do it yourself. This reminds me of a chapter in a book by Jack Williamson–about a place and time in which the humans had machines doing everything for them; the chapter was called, With Folded Hands. It is one thing to fold your hands and have time to think while a robot folds your laundry; it is another–with far worse implications–to have another machine do the thinking for you.
